The short version

• From ** 12 August 2026 **, Hear My Baby will be free to download from the App Store instead of a $6.99 one-time purchase.
• Free to download is not the same as free to use. New users will need a subscription to listen and record. We'd rather say that plainly here than have you find out on the paywall screen.
• Everyone who already bought the app keeps full access, permanently, for free. You do not need to subscribe, re-purchase, or contact us. It happens automatically.
• New pricing will be $4.99 / £4.99 weekly, or $29.99 / £29.99 a year with a 3-day free trial — about $0.58 a week.
• Nothing about how the app listens is changing. Same audio engine, same recordings, same reveal videos.

If you already own Hear My Baby

We sold this app for years with the words "No subscription. Yours forever." We meant it, and we're keeping it.

If you purchased Hear My Baby at any point before 11 August 2026, your access is permanent and free. Specifically:

• Your recordings and your timeline stay exactly as they are. We are not deleting, locking, or moving anything.
• Every feature you paid for stays unlocked — listening, recording, trimming, timeline, reveal videos, sharing, AI chat support.
• You will not be shown a paywall, an upsell, or a "your access is expiring" message.
• This applies to your Apple ID, so if you reinstall or get a new iPhone, tap Restore Purchases once and your permanent access comes back with it.

There is nothing you need to do. If you ever find yourself blocked by a paywall you shouldn't be seeing, email us and we'll fix it: support@impossible.am.

What's changing, and why

We think charging $6.99 up front stopped a lot of parents from ever trying. You'd find us at 20 weeks, feel unsure whether a phone microphone could possibly work, and close the tab. That's a fair reaction — it's the same reaction we'd have.

Making the app free to download lets a parent get it, read the honest guidance about what to expect, and see the app itself before deciding. It also lets us keep the app maintained. A one-time purchase made in 2019 doesn't pay for keeping up with each new version of iOS, audio engine work, or answering support emails in 2026.

We considered the alternative — a free listening tier — and decided against it, because the honest version of that tier would be a worse product for everyone. Fetal heartbeat sounds through a phone microphone are hard to find. A crippled free mode would mostly teach people that the app doesn't work.

So: free to download, subscription to use. We know that's less generous than "free" implies, which is why it's the second line on this page rather than buried.

What it will cost

The weekly plan exists for parents who want it for a specific stretch — the wait before a scan, the last few weeks. It has no free trial, deliberately: weekly plans with trials attached are how people end up charged for something they thought they'd cancelled.

You can cancel either plan from your iPhone's Settings at any time, in under a minute, and Apple sends you a reminder before a free trial converts to a paid year. We don't operate a retention maze.

What we're not doing

• No ads. Not now, not later.
• We don't sell your recordings, and we never will. They're yours.
• No price increase for existing owners. There is no price for existing owners.
• No change to what the app claims. Hear My Baby is not a medical device, does not diagnose anything, and does not replace your midwife or doctor. It's a keepsake app for hearing and recording your baby's sounds. If you're worried about your baby's movements or anything else in your pregnancy, call your maternity unit — don't use an app for reassurance.

Honest expectations, unchanged

None of this changes what the app can and can't do, and it's worth repeating before anyone pays for anything:

• It works from around 16 weeks at the earliest, and is clearest for many parents from around 27 weeks.
• It needs a genuinely quiet room, your phone case off, and patience — often several attempts across several days.
• Results vary with your baby's position and where your placenta sits. Some parents never get a clear result, and that is not a sign that anything is wrong.
• The sound you hear may be your own pulse or blood flow rather than your baby's heartbeat. There's a guide on our support site for telling the difference.
• It runs on iPhone only — not iPad — and needs iOS 17 or later.

If that sounds like too much uncertainty to pay for, don't subscribe — and we'd rather you knew that now.

Can I try it before subscribing? The yearly plan includes a 3-day free trial, which you can cancel at any point during those 3 days without being charged.

How do I cancel? On your iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Hear My Baby → Cancel. It takes under a minute and takes effect at the end of your current period.

Why isn't there a free version that lets me listen a few times? Because finding a fetal heartbeat with a phone microphone usually takes more than a few attempts, a limited free mode would give most people a false negative and teach them the app doesn't work. We thought that was a worse deal than being upfront about the price.

Is Hear My Baby a medical device? No. It's a keepsake app for hearing and recording sounds. It doesn't diagnose anything and it isn't a substitute for antenatal care. If you have any concern about your pregnancy or your baby's movements, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away.

When can I first hear my baby's heartbeat? Most parents can't pick anything up before around 16 weeks, and the sound is clearest for many from roughly 27 weeks onwards. Read our guide to listening at home.
